A crown (cap) is a permanent dental prosthetic that covers the entire portion of the tooth visible above the gum line, enclosing the damaged tooth completely. They are used to restore a tooth with substantial damage from decay or fracture, or which has had too many prior fillings. A crown can effectively save your natural tooth and feels comfortable and natural in your mouth. There are three main types of crowns used in different situations and for different results: porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, all metal (gold) crowns, and 100% ceramic crowns. The selection depends upon whether the tooth is anterior or posterior, the condition of the tooth, existing restorations of the patient’s other teeth and the need for strength and stability as well as aesthetic appearance.
A bridge is comprised of multiple prosthetic teeth connected together and permanently placed in your mouth to restore one or more missing teeth. The bridge is connected to one or more of your remaining teeth that the dentist prepares to accept the bridge and/or to one or more implants that have been surgically placed in your mouth. For a patient with many missing teeth, a bridge is often the “Cadillac” of restorations!
